A very welcome addition to the SACD catalogue and a first for this popular comic opera. Having recently heard Ivan Fischer's new self-directed staged version at RFH, London I have hopes that he will one day head for the recording studio also but lovers of this opera including me will delight at this newly released Universal re-tread. The only downside is that the original recording may have been in Mono - somebody help me here please.

This is definitely a stereo recording (1964).

Reviews on the Amazon website of this set seem to refer, confusingly, to the Fricsay mono version (1954) also on DGG
Hope this helps.

Thanks Graham. I have ordered a copy from CD Japan; due for release later this month. Rather expensive post-Brexit after all the conversions so hope it's a really good transcript and up to the high standards of this excellent label.

A wonderfully convincing recording, far more enjoyable than the original vinyl set that resides in my old record collection. What it shows is how limited was the process for producing vinyl discs from the original analogue recording tapes. Sadly, these single layer stereo re-masterings from Universal are having the rather unfortunate side effect of pulling the rug out from under the vinyl feet in A/B listening tests, exposing just how compromised that format was.

I know this disc costs a lot of money but if Mozart's comic opera is amongst your favourites than do not miss it or wait too long before you buy it as once OOP pre-owned examples will likely cost a small fortune.

This SACD version of the 1964 Böhm Zauberflöte reveals the recording in a totally new light : more detail, more nuance, when you are used to the old vinyl version (mono or stereo), listening to this version is like watching a 4K remaster of a movie instead of your old VHS tape.
