The source of this SACD is a PCM recording (very good) from 1982 to 1984. At that time, it was, I suppose, recorded in 16 bit/44.1 kHz. So, I wonder why it could be useful to upscale such a recording to the SACD format (24 bit/88.2kHz)? What are the benefits of it? Generally speaking, IMHO, there are no "old" PCM 16/44.1 recordings upscaled to SACD format. Is the purpose exclusively commercial? The conversion was made by the Emil Berliner Studios, a well-known German studio, which have made a lot of SACD conversions from analog tapes, for DGG and other brands.

Shane, you can find some discusssion about this if you have a look at Karajan's Grieg/Sibelius album, which was released at the same time in the same series.

To my knowledge these two Universal Japan SACDs are the only ones containing genuine digital PCM (16/44.1) recordings that Emil Berliner Studios converted to DSD.

Esoteric obviously loves to release new SACDs with genuine PCM recordings of the 80's or 90's. Although there's no additional benefit in terms of more resolution, the Esoteric SACDs may create a modified sound. I'm not sure if that is an improvement - but that's only my opinion.
