Many people go through life without having the faintest inkling of Messiaen’s music, but there is a before and after for all those who have tasted his extraordinary soundscapes. This is an astounding recording. For me Cinq Rechants is the particular attraction, having been involved in numerous performances myself. This is just about the most difficult choral work in the literature and the Danish National Vocal Ensemble are simply glorious. Virtually perfect, and almost certainly a far, far finer performance than the composer himself would ever have heard. For those who value and appreciate the limits of what the choral art can bear, this is one of the great recordings.
