Wilhelm Furtwängler (conductor)
Furtwängler was an excellent pianist and accompanied leading singers at opera rehearsals and lieder recitals by Wolf, Schubert, Schumann…. He did not consider Schumann to be a great symphony composer, yet refused to authenticate Mahler’s re-orchestrations of Symphony Nos. 2 and 3 (scores which appeared posthumously in 1927). Here we have what Furtwängler chose to bequeath to posterity, including his consummate, and as yet unparalleled, lebhaft peroration in Schumann’s Symphony N° 4 in D minor, his so-called Op. 120.
