Review by Adrian Quanjer - July 31, 2016
The title is misleading in the sense that it doesn’t, at first glance (see cover), refer to Enescu’s first two violin sonatas going here ‘under cover’, as it were. It shouldn’t, because it is a first rate addition to the catalogue. John Miller’s review of Enesco’s third sonata says it all: The sound of the 20's - Tarara / Vakova-Tarara, so I can be very brief: The Tarata’s give us here, too, an excellent account of nos. 1 & 2. Very professional, yet with the kind of youthful approach both sonatas merit, and the kind of Rumanian touch, so close to the heart of one of the greatest violinists of his time: George Enescu.
If you want to complete the set, this disk is a safe and most recommendable choice.
Both sonatas are complemented by what many violin students will know (and fear?): ‘Impressions d’enfance’ for violin and piano op. 28, yes indeed ‘the title song’. There are more Hi-Res accounts available, but this one can easily compete with the best, not in the least for reasons as set out above.
