Dvořák: Symphonies 8 & 9

Czech Philharmonic Orchestra
František Stupka (conductor)

Frantisek Stupka (1879-1965) is ranked among the greatest Czech conductors of the 20th century, alongside Bedrich Bakala, Rafael Kubelik, Vaclav Talich and Karel Ancerl. After leading a string quartet, he was co-director of the Czech Philharmonic with Talich from 1946-56. His career was limited to the east and his significant contributions to new ensembles like the Moravian Philharmonic remained without any modern studio recordings. Here Praga offers this tribute as a reminder Stupka's landmark rendering of two of Dvorak's masterpieces, Symphonies Nos.8 and 9.

Another DSD recording by Praga Digitals?

Comment by David Weber - August 3, 2016 (2 of 3)

From the description it appears to be a DSD transfer from a 1950s(?) recording.

Praga's source tapes for these DSD recordings are often of very suspect quality and disappoint more often than they please. Some of the tapes were clearly mono but you find this out only by buying a disc and reading the booklet notes. My advice to all is be very wary unless you can try before you buy.
