Grieg: Norwegian Dances, Symphonic Dances, Lyric Suite - Ruud

Grieg: Norwegian Dances, Symphonic Dances, Lyric Suite - Ruud

BIS  BIS-SACD-1291

Stereo/Multichannel Hybrid

Classical - Orchestral

Grieg: Norwegian Dances, Op. 35, Symphonic Dances, Op. 64, Lyric Suite, Op. 54

Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra
Ole Kristian Ruud (conductor)

The first surround-sound version of Grieg's justly popular Symphonic Dances. This highly atmospheric music, which so easily removes the listener to the lonely beauty of the Norwegian fjords, gains especially from the striking realism of a musically balanced surround-sound recording.

Further enticement is added by the inclusion of both the Norwegian Dances and the Lyric Suite on this disc. The performances are by Grieg's "own" orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. (Grieg actually came from Bergen and, after many years abroad, he made this second city of Norway his home and bequeathed a large sum of money to the musical life of the city.)

The conductor is Ole Kristian Ruud - Norwegian maestro with an international reputation, partly earned through his much-acclaimed recordings of the music by Geirr Tveitt, also on BIS.

Those looking for a suitable 'demonstration' record to show off their state-of-the-art hi-fi should look no further than this recording gem from 2002, from the heady days of the new DSD/SACD format when the seeking of the Holy Grail of 'perfect sound' still had currency amongst designers and recording engineers.

These popular works are beautifully played by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and in my view there are no better performances on disc.

If you can still find it, buy it before it is too late.
