The Humouresque & Serenades on the cover artwork can be found in Sibelius: Symphonies 1-7 - Berglund

This is my first Definition Series disc. All I can say is WOW. The sound is superb. My overall impression is that this is on par with the Esoteric releases and at a lower cost. The only real difference to the Esoterics is the lack of a paper insert with English liner notes.
The Tower Definition Series is a collaboration between Tower Records Japan and Warner Classics Japan. Thus these releases are all older EMI recordings. This is different from the Vintage Series by Tower, which has licensed recordings from different labels.
Some of the Definition Series discs are available on Amazon. All are available from the Japanese buying service called BUYEE.
While I only have this one disc, the series seems to me to be the real deal and worth a go in the crazy world of older reissue recordings that cost 2x or 3x the cost of a new sacd recording.

Amazing when you consider that I watched these concerts live in Bournemouth many years ago now having to import the SACD from Japan at a much higher price than we paid to attend in persons... Funny old World!

Steven, is it a DSD recording from the original analogue tapes, as per the Universal Single Layer discs?

Comment by Steven Harrison - December 17, 2017 (5 of 6)

HI John, there is not much information about the technical aspects of this disc other than the Definition Series is collaboration between Tower Japan and Warner Japan. The OBI has a 96kz/24 printed in amongst all the characters, so I guess we can assume that this analogue recording has been remastered to that before being authored to sacd. The booklet does list a Japanese mastering engineer. THere is no mention of where anything has been done.
The sound quality is superb, like an Esoteric release. I am a big fan of the Esoterics.

Yes indeed but very difficult to source in the UK. The main Esoteric dealer Synergy imported the early releases of the label but for reasons unknown abandoned the effort after a couple of years.

I am doing my best to encourage Presto to twist the arm of their distributor to try and get more Japanese label releases into the UK, they are our best bet so any UK readers can help by contacting Presto and re-inforcing this efforts.... please!
