Review by Mark Werlin - October 23, 2024
Jazz lovers are fortunate that the source tape for "Candy", recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in November 1957 and February 1958, was so well preserved that 60 years later this transfer to DSD provides such a vivid representation of the of the original performance.
Though only 19 years old at the time of the recording, Lee Morgan was more than ready to lead a set of standards and one recent original by Jimmy Heath (C.T.A.), without a second horn in the room. No one could fill the void left by the death of trumpetist Clifford Brown, but this album demonstrated Morgan's lyricism, technical control, and growing mastery of improvisation. It's one of the highlights of his early career, and belongs in the highest echelon of Blue Note releases.
Judging from an A/B comparison, Universal Japan SHM-SACD (UCGQ-9016) appears identical in sound quality and timings to the 2017 flat transfer DSD download (both are in stereo, not mono) mastered by Robert Vosgien. Although the SHM-SACD of "Candy" is out of print and not listed in the schedule of upcoming Blue Note SACD reissues from Tower Records/Blue Note (see Eric Dolphy: Out to Lunch#comments), the 2017 DSD download is available in Japan and in North America. Since other 2017 Vosgien DSD transfers are included in the Tower Records release schedule, it is possible that "Candy" will eventually be reissued on SACD.
