FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Tommy Wikström - August 23, 2018 (2 of 3)

This Mahler 4 is the best classical music performance on record - of all time! I know that's a hopeless statement, but this performance IS pure magic. The slow movement is a complete miracle beyond words. Defining moments of why I love classical music. Only Karajan could make an orchestra sound as great as Szell does here!

Sony's ability to sell their classics have long been disastrous, with this music being the most flagrant example. The new remastering (I have the DL 24/96 version) is clean and in good support of the music. But not as good sounding as the BFO/Fischer release on Channel Classics. Also a very good performance btw.

There's plenty more of Szell's Mahler in live performances - notably the 9th Symphony and Das Lied, released by the Cleveland Orchestra in surprisingly good stereo recorded for broadcast. Presumably there's more - I'm surprised Sony isn't trying to chase it down - god knows the Cleveland Orchestra could use the money.
