CELLO TREASURES FROM TWO MUSICAL SIBLINGS
German-Canadian cellist Johannes Moser and Scottish pianist Alasdair Beatson present a moving portrait of the Mendelssohn family with this recording of pieces by the siblings Felix and Fanny. Once composed for the popular Sunday Sessions at the Berlin Mendelssohn family house, these works fit into the typically nineteenth-century tradition of domestic music-making, albeit at the highest thinkable level. Beatson plays an 1837 Érard fortepiano, identical to the instrument that belonged to the Mendelssohn household when these pieces were composed. Besides Felix Mendelssohn’s two sonatas for cello and piano, his Variations concertantes, Op. 17, Lied ohne Worte, Op. 109 and Albumblatt in B Minor are featured. Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn’s Fantasia in G Minor and Capriccio in A-flat Major show what could have become of this talented female composer if societal conventions had not restricted her musical activities to the private salon.
This is Moser’s fifth album as an exclusive PENTATONE artist, after releases with the cello concertos of Dvořak and Lalo (2015), Elgar and Tchaikovsky (2017), works for cello and piano by Rachmaninov and Prokofiev (2016, awarded with a diapason d’or and ECHO Klassik 2017), and cello concertos by Lutosławski and Dutilleux (2018). He records for the first time with Alasdair Beatson, who makes his PENTATONE debut.

Owing to a very positive review of Moser's Elgar and Tchaikovsky album and my own high regard for it, I decided to get this album. Original recording format is DSD64. Recorded December, 2018 and released August, 2019. A deciding factor for me was watching Moser's YouTube channel video, Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xoJvgWZ34Q&t=5s, September, 2019. Of note, I guess because of the Pandemic, his channel went from sporadic videos to a deluge including practice sessions and podcast interviews with fellow musicians.
Johannes Moser plays a 1694 Andrea Guarneri cello and Alasdair Beatson plays a 1837 Erard piano. The sound is delicious and inviting. Track 2, Allegretto scherzando, was particularly interesting to me. A very soft piano accompanied by deep plucking bass notes. The sound was robust and compelling. Also, I very much enjoyed the two tracks by Felix's sister Fanny Mendelssohn (after marriage known as Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel). These tracks seemed more romantic and different, in a good way. The video talks about Felix and Fanny's brother, Paul, an amateur cellist. They wrote very challenging cello pieces maybe to "test" their brother's talents.
All in all, I have a very positive view towards this music. Multichannel sonics are excellent. Cello on left center and piano on right center. This music is personal and feels like the two are playing in your living room.
