This is one of the finest interpretations of Bruckner 5 committed to tape. Previous CD incarnations from Berlin Classics unfortunately were over-processed with Sonic Solutions No Noise to minimize tape hiss, taking some of the "life" out of the otherwise splendid stereo (studio) recording. (I owned the Eterna LPs at one time many years ago, and they accurately reproduced the recording, rendering the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra with stunning realism) I have the SACD on order from Japan and am eagerly anticipating it! If the new high-res DSD transfer is as good as Tower's recent SACD release of the Konwitschny Beethoven Symphony cycle -- a breathtaking revelation! -- this Bruckner 5 will once again be an unreserved and enthusiastic recommendation.

Once I receive the set and audition it, I will report back to this forum.

I have now received this from Japan and it meets and exceeds all of my expectations. The analogue master to DSD "straight wire" transfer restores this 1961 recording to its original glory. The downside, if even that, is the slight pre-echo on loud entrances (and there are plenty of those with Bruckner!) found on the master tape. Pre-echo (and more) had been eliminated in earlier Berlin Classics iterations processed with Sonic Solutions No Noise, but I gladly trade that for the brilliantly alive sound of this SACD. Konwitschny's interpretation remains unsurpassed, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra is revealed in all its glory.

I listened to this disc for the first time this week. It's a very fine recording of Bruckner's Fifth. I found an interesting review of this Tower Records release written by Ralph Moore and posted on the Musicweb International site. These SACDs are seldom reviewed outside of Japan. It's nice to be able to read about one of them in another language than Google-Translatese.

Both the Musicweb reviewer and John Proffitt (on this page) pointed out that there is some pre-echo on the recording. Personally, it didn't detract me from enjoying this performance. I doubt it will bother most listeners.
