Very much the curates egg this one.

Three albums spread over two disks, but not in chronological order. One of the albums ('The Hoople') also including a Quad mix.
According to the liner notes the package is "remastered from the original analogue tapes by Michael J. Dutton". So somewhat oddly (and in common with other Vocalion releases) the SPARS code is given as 'ADD'. The SPARS code rules according to Wikipedia are: "Second letter – the type of audio recorder used during mixing (analog or digital)". If the the code is being correctly used by Vocalion it suggests there has been a remix in the digital domain........at some point.
More positively the average DR's for the three albums range between 11 and 13.

Sound wise the three albums are somewhat of a piece on these SACD's. As far as I can tell these were not high quality recordings in the first place. Suffering as they do from same sonic shortcomings as many rock recordings from the early 70's. The recordings being fairly dull sounding for the most part, with flabby and overblown bass. A case of the high res medium highlighting the shortcomings more than the virtues. Chatter around the traps though suggests this release sounds better than previous digital releases. If this is indeed the case the previous digital releases must be pretty ordinary.

Interestingly it has also been asserted in some quarters that the mix used for the ATYD album does not appear to to be the original mix. Changes such as, segues between tracks being removed, volume levels between tracks being equalized, mandolin parts being dropped down in the mix are certainly suggestive of this being the case.

Nb. I can't comment on the Quad - not my thing.

So if you have an interest in this title, proceed with a bit of caution.

For me though there is too much that is not quite right about these SACD's.

Note

The Hoople is MCH and stereo; remainder is stereo only
