I picked up a copy of this disc almost by accident otherwise this new in-house recording venture might have passed me by not least because of the high cost of entry of their initial offer.

The whole presentation is elaborate to say the least but the oversized format of the packaging and its incompatibility with most CD storage facilities means it will be unattractive for some buyers. Having said that the booklet is beautiful detailed and illustrated and is a work of art in itself.

The venture has been promoted in collaboration with LSO Live, not a bad move on the part of the Cleveland hierarchy to plug into the huge experience and success of the LSO Live label. A similar collaboration kicked off the highly successful Mariinsky Orchestra's own label although the Covid pandemic and its imposed constraints may have doomed that label to extinction.

Having heard of the collaboration, I had hoped that Classic Sounds might have been the recording house for the label with recordings made in DSD or indeed some involvement of Sound Mirror but sadly not so. The 96kHz / 24 bit recording is sadly not state of the art for most discerning audiophiles and seems a strange choice in 2021 - perhaps there were extenuating circumstances imposed by current national and international lockdown regulations?

Performances are very good but the SQ in Stereo is spoiled by shrillness in the highest registers and a lack of air, focus and precision in the sound stage. I cannot recommend it to stereo listeners but will be interested in comments form our Mch colleagues.

Thanks for your frank comment, John. Always appreciated. I'm afraid though that there won't be any multi-channel views as the recording is Stereo Hybrid.

Hi Adrian

Thanks for your comments. I hadn't spotted that the recording is stereo only. I should have added that the sleeve dimensions are 19.5cm x 19.5cm.
