Review by Adrian Quanjer - June 6, 2022

Quelle découverte, quel charme! Am I biased? of course I am. A flautist from my region, and a good one at that, together with her Swiss (Geneva/Luzern) duet partner performing at the same professional level.

When Mozart visited Paris for the third and final time he was asked (compelled?) by the Duke de Guisnes to compose a concerto for two much-cherished French instruments: The harp and the flute. Both feature in this release; Odile Renault playing the flute and Elodie Reibaud the harpe; two soulmates united in “Les Connivences Sonores”. But this time no Mozart or contemporary composer. It is all about unusual and unfamiliar twentieth-century repertoire. Like I said: A discovery.

One wonders though why they have chosen ‘Musikalische Perlen’ rather than ‘Perles musicales’ as the title for this debut album. Neither the players nor any of the composers have a clear German language link. Not that it matters. The musical content remains what it is: Quite exceptional. It is the fruit of the duet’s quest for broadening repertoire for harp and flute

(To put the record straight: In Renault’s bio is a reference to the Caen Chamber Orchestra. It no longer exists. It developed into the Orchestre de Caen, a Haydn-Mozart style orchestra with 40 or so permanent members, closely connected with the city of Caen and its Conservatorium, and once, but quite some time ago, conducted by François-Xavier Roth. I’m pleased to say that this modest formation is my local band. The liner notes furthermore mention the Ensemble Orchestral de Normandie that has, as far as I know, never existed. I suppose that is meant l’Ensemble Instrumental de Basse-Normandie, since 2015 l’Orchestre Régional de Normandie.)

Irrespective of the musical weight of each of the compositions -and I’m sure views will be divided on that- the strength of this release lies in having now ‘on record’ music that has hardly ever been recorded before, let alone in such precious high-resolution surround quality Manfred Schumacher delivers. Fellow musicians playing the same instruments will sure want to have it, and the rest should make up their minds by listening to samples available on the internet. Chances are you will like it.
