An interesting release. Recorded in 1974 by VEB Deutsche Schallplatten Berlin, German Democratic Republic and released on the East-German ETERNA label (3 LPs), subsequently remastered for CD in 1995-6 and released on the Berlin Classics label, now re-remastered for SACD. Stellar cast, but slightly dated performance. Both the vinyl and CD versions are still available (Amazon). On the other hand, with so much living talent around and our common interest to support the few remaining HI-Res quality labels, shouldn't we give preference to newly recorded versions?

Based on what I could find on this site, there are twelve recordings of the Christmas Oratorio on SACD. Ten of them are modern; two of them date from the analogue era. Older recordings are not crowding out more recent talent.

Thanks, Athanaeus. Although my reckoning is slightly different, and reviews mixed, I agree that there still is sufficient choice among original SACDs released by the few remaining labels that still produce them. A pity that Suzuki’s Christmas Oratorio is not one of them.
