1971 LANDMARK PLAYS WITH REFERENCE-GRADE DETAIL, INTIMACY, AND DIRECTNESS ON HYBRID SACD

Of the countless accolades and analyses that surround Blue, no point is more significant than the fact that the 1971 Joni Mitchell album continues to become more popular, revered, referenced, and relevant with each passing day. Such vitality is not only extremely singular; it is the ultimate measure of great art and, in the context of Blue, indisputable proof of the record's accessibility, integrity, and timelessness. If the most brilliant and everlasting music seeks to find truths shared by all of humanity, Blue can be said to be universal doctrine.

Mobile Fidelity began shipping this new SACD release of Joni Mitchell's 1971 album "Blue" this week (2/5/2024), and after receiving my copy, I compared this 2024 SACD (UDSACD 2269, Mobile Fidelity) to the 2019 UQHCD version (WPCR-18240, Reprise) and to the 1997 HDCD/CD version (2038-2, Reprise). As expected, the SACD fared the best of the three versions, with more full and natural vocal reproduction, improved clarity, and better balance between vocals and instrumentation. The UHQCD disc fared well, though there was a slight harshness to the vocals, and the instruments seemed a bit too upstaged by the vocals. The HDCD/CD seemed relatively muted in comparison to the other two versions, and also had a relative harshness to the vocals. Bottom-line: This SACD appears (to this reviewer) to be the definitive digital version of this superb album.
