This marvellous set was originally issued on LPs by Readers Digest (licensed from RCA)
It was recorded in the Kingsway Hall, London in May 1965 by Producer Charles Gerhardt and Sound Engineer Kenneth Wilkinson.
Later it was digitally re-mastered by Brian Couzens and the two CDs appeared on the Chandos label in, I believe 1990.
It still sounds good on CD so its availability on SACD is really something to look forward to.

Agreed. Excellent combine of three virtues: Virtuosity, poetry and passion and no schmalz in the second movement of No. 2. Sweeps away much of the contenders of now and then. Horenstein is the perfect companion.

Hopefully not and don't forget Naxos had their own DSD / SACD recordings back in the Naughties when the format was commercialised. Both sides seem to be driven by the same enthusiasm for high res recording.

Hm, the article is all about Happy. But Klaus Heymann is not a big supporter of sacd. He only issued a few in the early days and quickly quit as the money didn't work. And he is a businessman first and foremost. But if he lets Brian run the company the same as always, then it will be all good. Chandos now issues more sacd's than Channel and Pentatone put together.

Rather worryingly still no links to any vendors on this site, and the only place I see it scheduled for release is in Japan (Tower, etc.). Does anyone know for sure that this will be an international release?

I bought this earlier this month in Hong Kong - it is labelled as a Chandos Classics release, no mention of Obsession. (P) date is 1966 (C) date is 2003, country of origin is UK.

I received the album from CDJapan today. There are a few things about this release that I find questionable - almost typical for Chandos, in my opinion. Neither the cover nor the booklet indicate that it’s a new remastering. Instead, it clearly states that the remastering was done for Chandos in 2003. The back of the cover also reads “24 bit/96 kHz digitally remastered”. So, I assume that we’re dealing with a 20-year-old remastering here, which previously served as the basis for the RBCD releases and is now being published in high-resolution form for the first time. The SACD is therefore most likely a PCM24/96 recording that was converted to DSD. Also, I noticed that both SACDs contain the ISO files in compressed form (SACD 1 = approx. 800 MB; SACD 2 = approx. 1 GB), which is somewhat unusual. Why compress the storage here when you’re already using 2 CDs? The compression would have made sense to me if everything had been packed onto a single SACD. Well, as I said: typical Chandos.

I don’t have a basis for comparison since I don’t have the old RBCDs, but I assume that this SACD doesn’t offer any major changes in sound compared to the previous RBCD editions. We’re simply dealing with a presentation in a higher resolution here. But that’s already something.
