Review by Adrian Quanjer - January 8, 2025

The combination of Flute and Harp is a favourite in France. Mozart discovered it when visiting the French capital. His Flute and Harp Concerto bears witness to a seven-month Parisian sojourn. This Second Volume of ‘Musikalische Perlen’ released by ARS Produktion will no doubt be well received in my part of the world. More so, because Odile Renault (any car association is sheer coincidence) is no stranger to where I live, having been a highly appreciated flautist of the Orchestre de Chambre de Caen (now called Orchestre de Caen). If my review shows signs of positive prejudice, then so be it. One hundred per cent objective reviewers are hard to find anyway.

That said, there is an objective reason to welcome this follow-on batch of rare repertoire for these two instruments. Lovers of this typical ‘salon’ combination will get a unique chance to widen their scope, notwithstanding the aléa of a compilation of works by lesser or even unknown composers. Not all are at the same quality or melodious level. Moreover, learning by listening is the magic potion for getting a rewarding result. My advice is to play a selection at the time. One may love ice cream, but perhaps not all flavours in one go.

Reading my review of Vol. 1 I realise that I risk repeating myself. So, I leave it here, confirming once more the professional approach of ‘Les Connivences Sonores’, demonstrating real mastery of their instruments, so eminently put on record by the Schumachers and intellectually supported by informative liner notes, written by both musicians, unmissable for anyone curious about the origin and conceptual side of what is on offer.

I’m one of those.
