This new SACD is based on a recent remastering by UK ClassicSound, carried out entirely in the DSD domain. The regular RBCDs already sound very good. I listened to a copy of the Tower Records Universal Vintage Collection +plus box containing the complete symphony cycle, and I must say that the differences compared to the SACD are moderate (the Tower Records box was newly remastered for RBCD in 2019).

However, the SACD has a more spacious and immersive sound. The lowest frequencies are rendered with greater accuracy and presence, adding depth and dimension. I have listened to quite a number of (SHM-)SACDs, but in my opinion this new release definitely belongs among the top tier. Its convincing sound may help listeners engage with the symphony—a challenging work that rewards repeated listening. (The same exquisite sound quality applies to the other SHM-SACD featuring Symphonies Nos. 10 and 15.)
