After Butterfly and La Bohême, both really worth having, Universal is pursuing their collection of expensive Sacds, which now appears to be a new special Karajan edition.
At least the quality of the new masterings is to cherish.
Although this Fledermaus is not my favourite one, it is here presented in its best possible sound. It will never make you forget that it consists of the assembly of many different sessions but Erika Köth almost sounds as if she was recorded at the Vienna opera house (in fact it was Rita Streich who sang in the live events but she was not under contract with Decca...).
Which next recording will benefit from a new mastering, if any? Otello (with del Monaco and Tebaldi, Tosca (with Price and di Stefano) or Carmen (with Price, Corelli and Freni)?
The high pricing level remains questionable...
