After Roland, Persée, Bellérophon, and most recently Phaéton, Christophe Rousset continues with Amadis to revive Lully's tragedies of the Grand siècle.... The score is one of Lully's most accomplished, a masterpiece of French heritage. All the ingredients of lyrical tragedy are not only magnificently balanced, but also extremely accomplished, almost sublimated? For example, the subject chosen by Louis XIV himself, who abandoned the theme of Greco-Roman antiquities for a libretto based on Montalvo's famous medieval fresco Amadis de Gaule, is an absolute novelty in the French repertoire. Also new, the prologue is directly related to the action. As for the "symphonic" pages supported by the timpani-trumpet duet, they deserve our full attention, especially the final chaconne, the most beautiful in French opera, if ever there was one. The sentimentally charged arias - the famous "Bois épais", "Tu me trahis malheureux", "Il m'appelle" - oscillate constantly between heroic courage and amorous sadness. The work premiered in Paris in 1684, and was performed in Paris and the provinces until 1772.

I am really discouraged to see so many labels ditching sacd. Does anyone have any details as to why this is happening? I find it hard to believe classical listeners are ditching physical media? Does anyone have any insight on this change?
