Alongside Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, this release features the world premiere recording of Mikhail Pletnev’s Rachmaniana, an eight-movement suite which was first performed in January 2026 at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. The suite reflects Pletnev’s own artistic voice—shaped by passion, lyricism, melancholy, and a joie de vivre both exuberant and rooted in pain. In Rachmaniana, he draws on and transforms existing material, reworking earlier pieces and reimagining characteristic gestures in a new orchestral context, so that familiar elements appear in a subtly altered, personal form.
Together, Symphonic Dances and Rachmaniana form a dialogue across time: one as Sergei Rachmaninoff’s final, self-reflective masterpiece, the other as a respectful yet imaginative homage. Rather than emphasizing modernist rupture, Pletnev’s work embraces a timeless idea of beauty—music that speaks directly from heart to heart, rooted in nostalgia, poetry, and melancholy.
