Hello.
Always a huge fan of this album and was awaiting its sacd release. Cant say I was overwhelmed but all is not lost. I was forewarned as to deficiencies' with the tape source. I can confirm there is a little distortion and some tape problems where during some songs there appears to be a very quick hissing sound which is only a micro second in length...again as the tapes have some age related wear to them.
My biggest gripe and one I was not aware of..........is the edit to Young Mans Blues. It is approximately 35 seconds shorter that the version I am used to listening to. This edit was made, I believe so as to fit all of the tracks on the vinyl record back in 1970. Had I know of this edit I would not have purchased this disc. I am not aware of any other edits but be forewarned.
As to the sound quality...........its hit and miss. The overall quality of the recording is very good......but with this particular tape used I felt it could have been better. On my system the bass and Townsends guitars are the winners.....but vocals and drums are also well rendered. I am content but not overwhelmed.
I cant help but feel that if another tape was used. .especially an unedited one...the sound could have been better.
Is this worth the purchase now or should you wait for the entire recorded performance sans edits to be issued years from now......that's your call.
Sincerely,
Analogue.
