Review by Graham Williams - November 25, 2004
All praise to CPO for recording this excellent SACD in what is promised to be a complete survey of the symphonic works of Felix Weingartner.
The two early works presented here are quite different in character. The music of the 1st Symphony, with its sunny outlook and gorgeous melodies, reminds me most of Dvorak.
The substantial fill-up (22'30) is the Symphonic Poem King Lear; an exciting piece clearly showing the influence of his teacher Liszt. It too is full of soaring romantic tunes and dramatic climaxes.
Both works are expertly played by the Sinfonieorchester Basel and recorded in a rich but clear acoustic, perfect for this type of music, and which is wonderfully enhanced by the surround channels.
Lovers of sumptuous late-romantic scores should not hesitate to buy this disc.
For my part, I can't wait for the next in the series!
