Review by John Broggio - August 6, 2007

As with The Tube Only Violin - Gaede, Liu, Daniel Gaede gives another recital disc that is full of technical wizardry allied to some gorgeous tunes.

Somewhat sadly, the normally present Liebesleid and Liebesfreud are not included on this disc. Nor are some other favourite Kriesler compositions but many are, including many of his best transcriptions. As a concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic, Gaede is arguably an ideal interpreter of this music that is steeped in that city's past in spirit (even though much was written after Kriesler had left the city of his birth). One can hear the golden tone much prized by both the orchestra and Kriesler himself shine through from the Stradivarius (tracks 4, 10, 12 & 17) and Guarnerius that Gaede plays so delightfully. The quixotic element in many of the compositions is also present in Gaede's interpretations - by no means would everyone choose to perform these compositions in this way but that is far from saying that they are unduly mannered renditions. Throughout, Phillip Moll provides sympathetic and vibrant accompaniments.

The sound is somewhat more problematic - this is an early Tacet recording in MCH and was recorded at the Siemens-Villa, Berlin in 1994 (4, 10, 12 & 17) and 1995 (1, 7, 11, 14) and in the Festeburgkirche, Frankfurt in 1996. Whilst the sound is consistent between all three times, the consistency is not the good kind and is has far more reverberation than would normally be expected. The stereo layer fares better but is not ideal.

Good musically but the recording lets the performers down.
