Review by John Broggio - September 10, 2006

This is another part of Capriccio's Bertini edition and it is largely inoffensive if not compelling Debussy conducting or playing. At no time, can one so readily catch whiff's of sea salt as one can with Karajan's 1960's account with the BPO of La Mer nor do they capture the wonderous & langourous beauty that this partnership found for the L'Apres midi d'un Faune. Similarly, Barenboim or Haitink both make more of the wonderful Nocturnes.

The sound is good for the period (1993 for La Mer, 1988 for Nocturnes & 1987 for Prelude) but the pretty well done 5.1 layer must have been generated artificially.

If you are desperate for these pieces to be on your shelf in SACD, then this is a reasonable placeholder but you will want to replace it at a later date.
