Review by John Broggio - August 12, 2006
This will be, sadly, the easiest review that I hope ever to have to write.
In his introduction to the disc, Soucek says of the Rachmaninov "For a long time I preferred just to listen to this piece instead of trying to play it because merely hearing it put me into a depressive mood." How I wish he had kept his preference going - this is 35 minutes of my life I will never get back and it provoked very similar feelings to what he described. This performance is the dullest of any piece I have ever heard. The Tchaikovsky doesn't fare much better.
Half a star for the notes being in the right order. In short, this is the sort of disc I'd give to someone with whom I no longer wanted to be friends!
The sonic side has a curious property of some phrases being echoed back. Not a great start for this young label. Still, things can only go one way...
