Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Nos. 1-3

Michael Korstick (piano)

An upbeat that became a sensation in itself: Michael Korstick’s complete recording of the Beethoven piano sonatas for OehmsClassics began with the Diabelli Variations. Reviewers were thrilled! The pianist now continues his Beethoven cycle with Volume 2: The Early Sonatas op. 2 – a recording which will appear as a SACD production. Korstick’s perfectionism in transforming notes into music is supported by recording technology that reproduces state-of-the-art sound and spatial quality. While the surround- recording earned unbelievable head-shaking at the beginning of the multi-channel era, even when only one instrument was recorded, it is now uncontested that the five-channel mode has increased sound authenticity sensationally. But even the high-resolution SACD stereo variant ensures a clear plus in terms of sound density and differentiation.

Review by John Broggio - November 28, 2006

In amongst the plethora of Beethoven sonata recordings this only stands out in an unpleasant way:
the recording is so bright and close that the hammers are painful to the ears!

Korstick himself provides illuminating notes but this is not matched by illuminating playing. The phrases seem fragmentary and there is no sense of a compelling journey which can transport the listener from beginning to end. In early Beethoven this is just as important as in later works due to the relatively facile nature of the music. Comparing Brautigam on SACD shows just what is missing, as do past masters like Gilels or Schnabel.

Apart from the battering delivered, the recording is otherwise clear but hardly a positive model.

Not recommended.

This set has some weird numbering - The first disc (this one) is labelled as Vol. 2. And discs 2-11 seem to have the entire contents of his cycle. But what was Disc 1?
