What left a lasting impression on me while listening to this SACD is the incredible depth and transparency of both the orchestral sound and the soundstage. At least through headphones, in all my decades of listening to music, I've rarely experienced such a full-bodied yet completely clear and uncompressed sound presentation.
Incidentally, the second SACD featuring Symphonies 1 and 4 exhibits the exact same sonic characteristics. On the other hand, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concertos with S. Hough can't quite match—at least not across all four concertos—the outstanding audio quality of the Ives albums, in my opinion.
