Review by John Broggio - April 27, 2010

This ninth volume of Cantatas presents 3 that Bach composed for the first Sunday of Advent (including two of "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland", BWV 61 & 62) with Cantata "Schwingt freudig euch empor", BWV 36 separating their presentation. The Cantata "Bereitet die Wege, bereitet die Bahn", BWV 132 which was composed for the fourth Sunday of Advent completes the disc.

Using the same inspired team of singers as Bach: Cantatas through the Liturgical Year, Vol. 8 - Kuijken, Gerlinde Samann - soprano, Petra Noskaiova - alto, Christoph Genz - tenor, Jan Van der Crabben - bass there is no need to worry about the quality of interpretation of the vocal lines and Kuijken's instrumentalists are an equal match to such dedication as always. Each has their moment of glory, although poor Petra Noskaiova has fewer opportunities to shine than the rest and undeservedly so - one can't help what Bach wrote though. It is impossible to single out gems from such output of consistently high quality; needless to say the aria's that each soloist has gives them a chance to shine and they take it a wonderfully humane and self-effacing way.

This disc was also recorded in Predikherenker, Leuven (Belgium). As in Volume 8, the reverberation time is less troublesome than in earlier releases and fortunately does not interfere with such marvellous music making.

As with the other discs in the series, recommended.
