Hermann Max and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio
Hermann Max, his Rheinische Kantorei and Das Kleine Konzert have made history with their interpretations of music mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries. Countless radio recordings – mostly produced by his “local” radio station WDR – many live concerts, for example at his own early music festival in Knechtseden, and a large number of CD recordings, made with increasing exclusivity for cpo: this is the balance of this impressive, incredibly diverse artistic life to date. Along with the great “classical” masterpieces, Max has kept his curiosity about forgotten works and new discoveries, and always reacts enthusiastically to ideas from our producer Burkhard Schmilgun: the Ferdinand Ries discoveries are resounding and convincing evidence of this. However, the time has finally come to document probably the most popular sacred work composed by the great musical director of the Thomaskirche in Max’s interpretation. Not in the least fussy, with sharp rhythmic accents, lively tempi and in stereo surround, here we have (according at least to the advertising machinery of the Mayor Label) the Christmas oratorio for the 21st century!
