Elisabeth Leonskaja (piano)

Enduring Legacy
When one of today’s leading pianists after many acclaimed concert performances presents new recordings of compositions from Beethoven’s late period, one may be absolutely certain that one is hearing absolutely individual and original interpretations. Since an excellently arrayed Steinway concert grand piano with the best acoustics was available to Elisabeth Leonskaja for this SACD multichannel production, an impressive result was virtually preprogrammed.

Innovative Freedom
Beethoven had long been deaf when during 1821-22 he crowned the long series of his sonatas so very rich in innovative elements. The composer declared his complete freedom from the customary sonata form and weighted the finale movements so emphatically that the sonatas seem to consist of two parts instead of three.

Interpretive Power
Elisabeth Leonskaja has a conjuring power capturing the wildness and passion of Beethoven’s music as well as the magic of its tender modulations. Her dramatic explosions are just as magnificent as the reserved, poetic passages of the E major sonata. In the A flat major sonata neither the reflective lyricism of the work nor the melodious feeling are neglected. The impressive interpreter also perfectly renders the C minor sonata. With absolute devotion Elisabeth Leonskaja renders audible what Thomas Mann meant when he had his Beethoven interpreter Wendell Kretzschmar speak in Doktor Faustus of “nights and resplendencies, crystal spheres in which cold and hot, peace and ecstasy are one and the same.”
