Thomas A. Irnberger
Jörg Demus

This recording traces an arc from Romanian and Hungarian folk dances by Bartók and Brahms; via waltzes by Johann Strauss Jr.; Richard Strauss Rosenkavalier Waltz; a song from Des Knaben Wunderhorn by Gustav Mahler; and pieces by Lehár, Goldmark, and Janácek to evergreens such as Schön Rosmarin and Liebesleid by Fritz Kreisler. Thomas Albertus Irnberger s brisk performance, with an assured sense of style, demonstrates how difficult it is to draw the line between serious music, salon music, and entertainment music.

There are 21 bands on this disc, and it includes music by Mahler, Goldmark, Janacek, Johann Strauss Jr and Richard Strauss as well as Bartok, Lehar, Dvorak and Brahms. But the thing I wanted to point out is how Thomas Albertus Irnberger makes all this music really sing! This is a wonderful SACD. On top of an interesting selection of music, beautifully played, there is quite excellent multichannel sound. The artist wrote the quite illuminating program notes as well.
