Iveta Apkalna (organ)
This new CD of ECHO prize-winning organist Iveta Apkalna begins with the toccata from Widor’s most popular symphony: Symphony No. 5, also a popular test for the virtuosity of every concert organist. The other works on this CD are arrangements for organ of symphonic works by French composers, although both Saint-Saëns as well as Fauré were organists in Paris, which simply underscores the significance of this instrument for the late romantic period in France.
Latvian organist Iveta Apkalna is one of the few female organists who has established herself in the concert business as a virtuoso. She combines a deep sense of musicality and masterful technique with an unerring instinct for the effect of the music. In recent years, she has made a major contribution to freeing the organ from its “dusty” image. Iveta Apkalna has concertized at major festivals and with leading orchestras (Berlin Philharmonic, Hamburg Philharmonic, RSO Berlin, Gürzenich Orchestre Cologne, Kremerata Baltica etc.) under the direction of such conductors as Claudio Abbado, Simone Young, Marek Janowski, Markus Stenz, Christopher Hogwood, Andris Nelsons and others.
