Review by John Broggio - September 9, 2012

This set is a compilation of:
Mozart: Youth Symphonies Vol. 1 - Marriner,
Mozart: Youth Symphonies Vol. 2 - Marriner,
Mozart: Youth Symphonies Vol. 3 - Marriner and
Mozart: Youth Symphonies Vol. 4 - Marriner
The booklet is a hybrid of the four single discs and comes with a note that connects them all.

As is common with all, Sir Neville Marriner gets his ASMF to play with considerable style (even by the standards of today & HIP practice). Tempo choices are superb, never too fast or too slow and by placing the violins left and right of the podium adds greatly to elucidating Mozart's already outstanding grasp of musical argument. Although these pieces are naturally not in the same league as, say, his Jupiter symphony, these works have a charm and freshness that eclipse almost all other contemporaneous works.

The sound from Philips and lovingly restored by PentaTone is as good as one could hope for.

Altogether for a fascinating glimpse of the young Mozart, this is highly recommended.
