Saint-Saëns: Piano Trios Opp. 18 & 92

Vienna Piano Trio

Esprit Parisien
Against all fashionable trends prevailing in nineteenth-century Paris, above all in the opera, Camille Saint-Saëns composed instrumental music distinguished by classical perfection in form, melody, and harmony continuing to produce a profound effect even today. Saint-Saëns remained true to his principles his whole life long. His piano trios, performed on this new recording by the Vienna Piano Trio, wonderfully demonstrate just how well he knew his Viennese models and was able to combine them with French esprit.

Notable Talent
Saint-Saëns was a gifted pianist, and his profound knowledge of the resources of his instrument provides for a compositional texture that is just as filigree as it is breakneck, constantly making space available to the strings for opulent cantilenas. For example, the opening of the second trio – how wonderfully the melody in the unison of violin and cello rises up over the most intricate chord repetitions in the piano! And a complete movement simply and completely surprisingly conveys itself in 5/8 time!

Quotable Style
Saint-Saëns was only a little younger than Johannes Brahms, but toward the end of his eighty-six years he lived to witness the sensation caused by Stravinsky in Paris with his Sacre. The sovereignty with which he assimilated the developments of his time and integrated them into his style is remarkable. He was not at all afraid to have his fun by quoting the style of his admired models, and from this perspective his second trio published in 1892 is fascinating territory for quotation collectors and rarity hunters.

Wiener Blut
Classical music flows in the veins of these three Viennese musicians, and it is always a pleasure to experience their wide-ranging dynamics and forceful and vigorous playing. In addition, the uncommonly natural 2+2+2 recording technique of this Super Audio CD compellingly situates the musicians in the listening space.
