I am flagging up this recording as for many colleagues it may have slipped under their radars because of the difficulty of buying Exton recordings outside Japan. Any recording of Yamada is worth collecting as he really is a rising star.

In this double symphony set which is played superbly the surprise is the very little known Kalinnikov Symphony, an absolutely outstanding and original work that begs the question of why it is not part of the central repertoire. I had no knowledge of it until one of the UK music journals brought it to the attention of its readership.

if you haven't heard it try to follow up from this comment and listen to a few minutes on-line. It is almost guaranteed you'll be hooked. It is original, exciting and nothing like any other composer. Nothing ersatz about this.

As for the Glazunov, I rejected that years ago as trivial and unimaginative and upon re-hearing it many years later neither my view nor my mood has improved. One for the bin and conveniently on a separate disc for just that purpose!

Although only available as download (PCM24/44.1) I strongly recommend the BIS-recording with Kees Bakels/Malaysian Philharmonic. The album contains both symphonies of Kalinnikov. The second symphony in A major is as attractive as the first symphony (g minor). I can only underline hiredfox's enthusiastic annotation about Kalinnikov. His both symphonies are undeservedly overlooked musical gems. If you look a bit closer, you'll see how well-composed his symphonies are: you'll find contrapuntal writing (e.g. fugatos in the first movements of both symphonies), using musical themes across the movements (e.g. the main theme of the 2nd movement appears also at the end of the finale of the 1st symphony), dazzling and sparkling orchestration (listen to the 3rd movements of both symphonies or look at the thrilling strings/woods parts at the coda of the 2nd symphonie's finale).

Regarding the musical style, I think Kalinnikov is absolutely comparable to Glazunov or - even more - Borodin, but in contrast to Glazunov, Kalinnikov's style is more genuine and original whereas Glazunov tends to be a bit academical/scholastical. (Nevertheless I really like Glazunov's symphonies also very much!)

Happy listening!

Does it say in the booklet whether this is a PCM or DSD recording? Thanks!

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

It says "DSD Recording" on the back of the case. Note that it's just a stereo SACD though.

It is indeed a DSD recording and as reported earlier (by me) this is an outstanding recording by any measure. CDJapan is your best source. Doubtful that mch would add much to the overall sound quality so don't let that deter potential buyers
