Pachelbel’s Organ Works in Surround Sound I

We are inaugurating our new complete recording of the organ works of Johann Pachelbel, one of the most important composers of the Southern German organ tradition, with five CDs, all of them in surround sound and with top organists performing at selected instruments. »The present recording aims at offering a new look at Pachelbel’s keyboard oeuvre and intends to correct the prevailing view of him often held in organist circles – that of a composer of liturgical music for practical use without higher artistic aspirations. Since it is difficult to differentiate between organ works and harpsichord works, this audio edition presents his complete extant works for keyboard instruments on twelve CDs: ten have been recorded on various historical organs and two on the harpsichord. Organists of the twentieth century essentially drew on two editions of Pachelbel’s organ music: Max Seiffert’s Denkmälerausgabe of 1901-03 and Karl Matthaei’s selection of his works (later expanded by Wolfgang Stockmeyer)« (Michael Belotti). These earlier editions no longer meet today’s standards. All the available material was reexamined for the new edition of the Complete Works for Keyboard Instruments (edited by Michael Belotti and published by Wayne Leupold Editions in Colfax, North Carolina) and employed by all the organists participating in our Pachelbel edition.
