Ensemble Blumina

award-winning
Would you have guessed? André Previn, world star on the podium and at the piano, has won no less than four Oscars – as a film-music composer! Forsaking Hollywood for a dazzlingly successful career as a pianist and conductor, he never lost his remarkable talent for composing. The Ensemble Blumina has now recorded his Trio for oboe, bassoon and piano – surprising us with a virtuosic interplay of alternation and contrast, which flashes mercurially through the genres and is happy to embrace opulent Broadway sounds.

exemplary
Previn had an example to follow for this trio scoring. Francis Poulenc composed for this combination as a young man; together with his friends in the "Groupe des Six", he set out to match Wagnerian passion with innocent amusement. Like his role model, he had the background, drawing upon all sorts of influences from music history: formally modelled on Haydn and Saint-Saëns, a French overture begins the work. Again and again, one is astonished at the ease with which the mood changes.

entertaining
Jean Françaix, grand master of the witty Divertissement, is another composer who wrote for the Ensemble Blumina's imaginative formation. Françaix as we know him: crazy virtuosity alternating with heartfelt feeling, jolly fun and games mixed with expertly varied polyphony – first-class entertainment at the highest level!

nimble
And the Ensemble Blumina takes good care of that: the three musicians hailing from Russia, Estonia and Germany embody the best European tradition of music-making. Their wide experience of chamber music means we forget their furiously flashing fingers in sheer fascination.
